One U.S. city has virtually no traffic lights – but it’s safe to drive there

Traffic circles are quite rare in America, dominated in this country by traffic light intersections.

The town of Carmel, Indiana, is a curious exception. There are about 150 traffic circles per hundred thousand residents.

Jim Brainard studied in the UK in his younger years and is still impressed by British roads, where accidents are rare. After becoming mayor of his hometown, he enthusiastically took up the task of rebuilding the roads, replacing traffic lights with traffic circles.
