Evaluation of dog pedigree is carried out according to the generally accepted standard: the appearance, behavior, parameters of animals are checked. In an effort to breed the ideal breed, breeders cross closely related individuals. As scientists have found out, this often leads to the development of serious diseases.
Specialists have analyzed 227 dog breeds. As it turned out, the inbreeding coefficient (the risk of genetic pathologies due to inbreeding) is 25 percent, which is a serious exceeding of the safe level.
As the experts explained, some breeds become “too inbred” for 2 reasons. 1st – it depends on the size of the primary population. No. 2 – the animals became so due to breeders’ desire for perfect appearance.
